Etymology

Not a classical word. Given that the natural distribution of Angelica archangelica and other Old World species has its southern limit not much beyond the Caucasus and Central Asia, probably a calque of Ottoman Turkish ملك اوتی (melek otu, angelica) and that of French angélique – Meninski yet does not know the word and gives for angelica سنبل خطایی (sümbül-i hetayı, literally Cathay nard) which is now current in Persian.
