From Classical Syriac ܚܡܵܡܵܐ (ḥəmāmā). Cognate to Ancient Greek ἄμωμον (ámōmon) → Latin amōmum, an Oriental borrowing. The source of this word is lost. It is also not certain which plants were really denoted in antiquity by these words – regard in particular that the genus Amomum alone comprises around two hundred species and new ones are found.
