From Aramaic חַסָּא (ḥassā), from Akkadian 𒌑𒄭𒄑𒊬 (ḫassū, “lettuce”), from Sumerian 𒄭𒄑𒊬 (ḫi-izsar /hiz/, “lettuce”); cognates with Classical Syriac ܚ̈ܲܣܸܐ (ḥassā) and Hebrew חַסָּה (ḥássā). Note also Old Armenian հազար (hazar).
