From Middle Persian (hwʾlbʾl /xwārbār/, “food and drink”), a compound of (hwʾl /xwār/, “food”) + (bʾl /bār/, “fruit”); compare Manichaean Middle Persian 𐫟𐫇𐫀𐫡 𐫀𐫇𐫅 𐫁𐫀𐫡 (xwʾr ʾwd bʾr /xwār ud bār/, “food of all kinds”). Akin to Old Armenian խորբար (xorbar), Old Georgian ხუარბალი (xuarbali), Georgian ხორბალი (xorbali), Iranian borrowings.
