Usage notes

As in the examples above, the construction is impersonal. What in English would be the subject of "to like" is introduced with a pronominal enclitic attached to خوش (xoš, pleasant), which is analyzed as either the grammatical possessor of the pleasantness or as the indirect object of its coming. What would be the object of "to like" is introduced with the preposition از (az, from, of). Hence the construction literally means "one's pleasantness comes from " or "it comes pleasantly from to one".

In order to explicitly state the identity of the person liking it, the noun is introduced as the topic before the verbal construction, which is still marked for the third person. See the example of Fatima above.
