Perhaps from Proto-Semitic *rukba- (“knee”), metathetic form of Proto-Semitic *birk- (“knee”), whence also the root ب ر ك (b-r-k). Ehret (1995) derives this word from Proto-Afroasiatic *ruk- (“to bend”) instead.
