From Middle Persian (lwck' /⁠rōzag⁠/), 𐫡𐫇𐫝𐫃 (rwcg /⁠rōzag⁠/, fast, fasting), from Proto-Iranian *ráwčakah (fasting). Equivalent to روز (ruz, day) +‎ ـه (-e). Cognate with Baluchi روچگ (rōčag) and Southern Kurdish ڕووژە (rûje).
