Identical to Jewish Palestinian Aramaic זרגונה (zargōnā), Jewish Babylonian Aramaic זרגונא (zargōnā), Classical Syriac ܙܪܓܘܢܐ (zargōnā), Hebrew זרגון (zargōn), also meaning vine shoots, which could be considered to contain the Northwest Semitic diminutive suffix -ōna, comparing Hebrew זרדים (“young sprouts, shoots; hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna); whitethorn (Crataegus azarolus) and its shoots”) and زَعْرُور (zaʕrūr, “thorn-apple (Crataegus)”), but the term most likely passed via Aramaic from Middle Persian (zargōn, literally “gold-coloured”) whence Persian زرگون (zargôn, “gold-coloured”), a doublet of which is also present in مَازَرْيُون (māzaryūn, “spurge-olive (Daphne mezereum)”).
