Reduplication of زَغَلَ (zaḡala, to spurt forth; to overpower and suck (said of a beast’s child)) in the adjective sense, whereas in the “squab” sense probably reinterpreted from Classical Syriac ܙܘܓܠܐ (zawgalā, zūḡalā, young bird (especially of a dove)), itself metathesized from the form valid in Palestinian Syriac ܓܘܙܠܐ (gVzalā, young bird (especially of a dove)) which passed as جَوْزَل (jawzal).
