First attested in c. 1695 as Middle Hindi سنیچر (sanīcar)ِ,[1] inherited from Prakrit 𑀲𑀡𑀺𑀘𑁆𑀘𑀭 (saṇiccara), likely from Sanskrit *शनैश्चर (śanaiścara), from शनि (śani) + चर (cara).[2] Cognate with Punjabi چَھنِچَّھر (chanicchar) / ਛਨਿੱਛਰ (chanicchar) and Sindhi ڇَنْڇَرُ (chancharu).
