From Middle Persian. Cognate to Classical Syriac ܨܝܛܪܓ, ܨܝܛܪܩ, Classical Persian شیتره (šaytara, šītara), شیترک (šaytarak, šītarak). Do not confuse with شَاهْتَرَج (šāhtaraj, fumitory). If not ultimately identical to it, possibly from Sanskrit चित्रक (citraka, doctorbush, Plumbago zeylanica).
