From the older form آبجه (abıca, abuca), from Proto-Turkic *abučka (“uncle”), probably under the influence of Arabic عَمّ (ʕamm, “paternal uncle”). Cognate with Bashkir абышҡа (abışqa), Chuvash упӑшка (up̬ăška), Kazakh абышка (abyşka), Kyrgyz абышка (abışka), Southern Altai абышка (abïška) and Tuvan ашак (aşak).
