    From Ancient Greek κάδος (kádos). The form قَدَس (qadas), anciently used in the Ḥijāz and thence exported to Northwestern Arabic, came via AramaicClassical Syriac ܩܱܕܣܴܐ (qadsā, qaddəsā).
