Etymology

From an extinct Central Asiatic substrate. Cognate to Karakhanid (qulabuz), Chagatai قولاوز (qolavuz, qolauz), Bulgar (qolovur), Kipchak قلاغوز (kulağuz), Yakut халабыс (qalabıs), and the Turkic loanwords Byzantine Greek κολόβρος (kolóbros) / χουλοῦβρος (khouloûbros, a Bolghar title), Persian قلاوز (qolâvoz), قلاووز (qolâvuz), Hungarian kalauz.

The similarity to Latin clāvus (nail; (metonymically) helm) and to Classical Syriac ܩܦܠܘܛܐ (qap̄lūṭā, qap̄lōṭā, leek; (figuratively) nail), instead from Ancient Greek πράσον κεφαλωτόν (práson kephalōtón, literally headed leek), is coincidental.
