From Arabic ما عاد (mā ʕāda), literally: “he hasn’t returned ”. While the construction is verbal in standard Arabic, requiring conjugation of the verb عاد (ʕāda) according to the subject of the phrase, it has become adverbial in North Levantine Arabic and is generally uninflected. Compare to this the Hebrew adverb עוד (ʿōd, still).
