A native formation, whose constituents ultimately go back to Proto-Iranian *niš- (“down, away”) and *hwar- (“to eat, consume”). Cognate with Pashto شخوند (šxwand, “chewing, rumination; cud”), Waziri (xšan, “piece of bread”), (xšān, “chewing the cud”). Akin to Old Armenian նշխար (nšxar, “remnants of food”), Aghwan 𐕎𐔼𐕐𐔴𐕍𐔰𐕜 (nišeq̇aṭ, “dinner”), Iranian borrowings.
