هشتن

From Proto-Indo-European *selǵ- (“to let go”). Akin to Middle High German selken (“dribble (clouds)”). Other Indo-Iranian cognates include Central Kurdish ھێشتن (hêştin, “permit”), Pashto ايښودل (iśodəl, “to place”) and Sanskrit सृजति (sṛjati, “discharge, emit”). Also related to Old Armenian արձակ (arjak, “free, loose”) and ապահարզան (apaharzan, “divorce”) which are Iranian borrowings.

• The imperative form of this verb “بهل (behel)” is often shortened to “بل (bel)” in spoken Persian.
• In some dialects هشتن (heštan) is preferred, while in others, including Tehrani Persian, گذاشتن (gozâštan) is preferred.
