Etymology
Akin to Parthian 𐭐𐭕𐭉𐭊𐭅𐭎𐭐𐭍 (ptykwspn /pāδgōspān/) in the ŠKZ inscription. The Middle Persian counterpart is damaged in the inscription, but has been reconstructed as *𐭯𐭠𐭲𐭪𐭥𐭮𐭯𐭠𐭭 (pʾtkwspʾn /pāygōsbān/), from (pʾtkws /pāygōs/, “district, province”) + (-pʾn' /-bān/, “-keeper, -guard”). Old Armenian պատգոսապան (patgosapan), պատգոս (patgos) and Arabic فَاذُوسْبَان (fāḏūsbān) are borrowed from Iranian.
