According to Meyer, borrowed from Greek πετσούδα (petsoúda, large tuna; bonito), ultimately from Italian pezzo (piece).[1] According to Barbera, borrowed from Sicilian pasciuta (well-fed, large), reportedly nominalised to refer to large tunas.[2] Compare also the synonymous archaic Italian pecciuto.
