According to Meyer, borrowed from Greek πετσούδα (petsoúda, “large tuna; bonito”), ultimately from Italian pezzo (“piece”).[1] According to Barbera, borrowed from Sicilian pasciuta (“well-fed, large”), reportedly nominalised to refer to large tunas.[2] Compare also the synonymous archaic Italian pecciuto.
