Persian
Etymology
From کاو (kâv, present stem of کاویدن (kâvidan, “to burrow, to dig, to search deeply, to investigate”)) + ـاک (-âk, suffix that forms the active participle from the present verb stem).[1] The suffix is an alternative form of ـا (-â), which originates from Middle Persian -ʾk' (/-āg/).[2] Refer to خوراک (xorâk, “food”) for another example of a word that ends this alternative form of ـا (-â), and to گویا (gôyâ, “capable of speech”) or رسا (resâ, “audible”) for examples of words that ends in the standard form of the suffix.
Alternatively, it may be from Turkic.[3]
