Etymology

From کاو (kâv, present stem of کاویدن (kâvidan, to burrow, to dig, to search deeply, to investigate)) +‎ ـاک (-âk, suffix that forms the active participle from the present verb stem).[1] The suffix is an alternative form of ـا (), which originates from Middle Persian -ʾk' (/-āg/).[2] Refer to خوراک (xorâk, food) for another example of a word that ends this alternative form of ـا (), and to گویا (gôyâ, capable of speech) or رسا (resâ, audible) for examples of words that ends in the standard form of the suffix.

Alternatively, it may be from Turkic.[3]
