From Middle Persian (gwmʾl-tn' /⁠gumārdan⁠/), 𐫃𐫇𐫖𐫀𐫡𐫅𐫗 (gwmʾrdn /⁠gumārdan⁠/, “to appoint, commission, entrust”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *mere (“to delay, hinder”). Cognate with Latin mora (“delay”).
