Inherited from Prakrit *𑀕𑀺𑀤𑁆𑀤 (*gidda, jackal) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀟- (-ḍa-).[1] Cognate with Bengali গিধড় (gidhoṛ), Punjabi ਗਿੱਦੜ (giddaṛ) / گِدَّڑ (giddaṛ) and Sindhi گِدَڙُ (gidaṛu).
