Assyrian Neo-Aramaic

Etymology

From the older form *ܒܪܲܬܵܐ (*brattā), variant of Aramaic בַּרְתָּא (barṯā), from Proto-Semitic *bint-. Possibly a back-formation from old possessive forms such as Classical Syriac ܒܪܲܬ݂ܝ (braṯ, my daughter); compare Mlahsö ܒܪܰܬܐ (brato), Turoyo ܒܰܪܬ݂ܐ (barṯo), Arabic بِنْت (bint), Hebrew בַּת (bat) and Akkadian 𒁉𒅔𒌈 (bintum). The latter noun is derived from the former through baby talk or mimicking of it.

Pronunciation

Noun

ܒܪܵܬܵܐ (brātāf (plural ܒ̈ܢܵܬ݂ܵܐ (bnāṯā), masculine ܐܸܒܪܵܐ (ibrā))

  1. daughter
  2. girl, child
    Synonyms: ܝܲܠܕܬܵܐ (yaldtā), ܫܒ݂ܲܪܬܵܐ (šḇartā)
  3. endearing term for young girls or women who are younger

Usage notes

  • (daughter): This is only used for genetic and adopted daughters, not stepdaughters. A stepdaughter is instead referred to as ܒܪܵܬ ܓܲܒ݂ܪܵܐ (brāt gaḇrā, literally the daughter of a husband) or ܒܪܵܬ ܒܲܟ݂ܬܵܐ (brāt baḵtā, literally the daughter of a wife).
