Classical Syriac
Etymology
In spite of the resemblance to Persian زهر (zahr, “poison”) and parallels such as Ottoman Turkish اغو اوتی (ağu otu, “hemlock”) from اغو (ağu, “poison”) probably not an Iranian borrowing with an equivalent of Iranianate ܙܗܪܐ (zahrā, “poison”) but natively from a variant of ܙܗܪܐ (zahrā, “splendour, brightness; flower”), which is fittingly attested in Targumic Aramaic as צִהֲרא (ṣihrā), צִיהֲרא (ṣihrā, “brightness”), with the same semantic motivation as Old Armenian խինդ (xind, “joy; poison hemlock”), on the grounds that Iranian does not attest anything similar but Persian uses شوکران (šāwkarān) in the sense of “hemlock” which Syriac has as ܫܲܟܪܘܿܢܵܐ (šaḵrōnā, “henbane”).
