N'Ko
Punctuation mark
ߑ (')
- the dagbasinna of the N'Ko alphabet: indicates the absence of a vowel after a consonant.
Usage notes
Standard N'Ko orthography is that when two successive syllables have the same vowel, the vowel is only written after the second consonant, e.g. ߓߟߏ ⟨blo⟩ is pronounced /bolo/. However, foreign loanwords sometimes contain consonant clusters, and in such cases the dagbasinna is used to indicate that the first vowel does not occur, e.g. ߓߑߟߏ ⟨b'lo⟩ is to be pronounced /blo/. This convention is somewhat like the conventional English and French spelling N'ko for what is really just /ŋko/.
