From Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hā́gas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hā́gas, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ég-os ~ *h₂ég-es-, from *h₂eg- (“sin, crime, fault”). Cognate with Ancient Greek ἄγος (ágos, “pollution, guilt”), Old English acan (whence English ache).

     Far from us be your blazing dart, O Maruts, when we, through human frailty, commit a sin against you.
