Pronunciation
Etymology 1
Inherited from Proto-Indo-European *ku, *kū, formed from *kʷ-. Compare Avestan 𐬐𐬏 (kū), Albanian ku (“where?”), and Latin ubi. Related to किम् (kim, “what?”).
Monier-Williams theorizes that this was originally an interjectional interrogative word signifying "how (strange)!", which described an oddity or deficiency in something. See the prefix कु- (ku-) for more.
