Etymology

Of unclear origin. Perhaps from a Proto-Indo-European *(s)tews-, an extension of *(s)tew- (to push, hit), and thus related to Polish stygnąć (to cool down). Probably not borrowed from a substrate like Munda. Possibly related to तुहिन (tuhina, frost, cold).
