Etymology

From an earlier form नद (nada) (with retroflexion due to substrate influence, perhaps from a Dravidian language; compare Tamil நாணல் (nāṇal), Kannada ನಳ್ಳು (naḷḷu, reed)), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *nada (compare Middle Persian nʾd (nāy, nay, reed, cane)), from Proto-Indo-European *nedo- (reed); outside of Indo-Iranian, compare Old Armenian նետ (net, arrow), Hittite (nāta-, redd, arrow, drinking straw). See also the Sanskrit root नद् (nad, to resound, vibrate, thunder), which नड (naḍa) is likely a nominal formation of.[1]
