Of uncertain origin. Leumann derives the root from a phonetic dissimilation of मन्द् (mand, “to rejoice, gladden”) after a labial prefix, for example, अभिमन्द् (abhimand, “to gladden”) > अभिनन्द् (abhinand, “to please, rejoice at”).
