Of uncertain origin. Leumann derives the root from a phonetic dissimilation of मन्द् (mand, to rejoice, gladden) after a labial prefix, for example, अभिमन्द् (abhimand, to gladden) > अभिनन्द् (abhinand, to please, rejoice at).
