From Proto-Indo-Iranian *paršíH, from Proto-Indo-European *pels-íh₂. Cognate with Pashto پرښه (parša), Ancient Greek πέλλα (pélla, “stone”). See also पाषाण (pāṣāṇa). Compare Ashkun paṣú (“mountainslope, side”), Kamkata-viri paṣǘ, paṣí (“mountainslope, side”), Prasuni Uṣǘt (“Pashki, literally "place of the rock"”).
