Etymology
A borrowing from a local language, probably Austroasiatic; compare Mon မြေက် (mrek) and Khmer ម្រេច (mrɨc), as well as Proto-Dravidian *miḷVku, the latter which probably also borrowed from the same source as the Sanskrit. The Sanskrit form is the source of borrowings into Iranian, Turkic, and other Western languages; compare Persian مرچ (murč), Kyrgyz мурч (murc), and Hungarian bors.
