Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Iranian *myázdʰas (sacrificial oblation), from Proto-Indo-European *meyh₁- + *dʰeh₁-.

The first component may be related to any of मेध (medha, offering), मयस् (mayas, pleasure), Hittite (/miye-/, to thrive, grow). For the second component, compare धा (dhā, to place, set down).

Cognate with Avestan 𐬨𐬌𐬌𐬀𐬰𐬛𐬀 (miiazda), Middle Persian (myzd /mēzd/), the latter whence Persian میز (miz, table) and Hindi मेज़ (mez, table).
