From Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hyaȷ́atás (“holy, worthy of worship”); ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₁yaǵ- (“to worship”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬫𐬀𐬰𐬀𐬙𐬀 (yazata, “worthy of worship”).

   • c. 1700 BCE – 1200 BCE, Ṛgveda 5.8.1:

     त्वामग्न ऋतायवः समीधिरे प्रत्नं प्रत्नास ऊतये सहस्कृत ।
     पुरुश्चन्द्रं यजतं विश्वधायसं दमूनसं गृहपतिं वरेण्यम् ॥

     tvāmagna ṛtāyavaḥ samīdhire pratnaṃ pratnāsa ūtaye sahaskṛta.
     puruścandraṃ yajataṃ viśvadhāyasaṃ damūnasaṃ gṛhapatiṃ vareṇyam.

     O Agni, urged to strength, the men of old who loved the Law enkindled you, the Ancient, for their aid,
     You who are very bright, and holy, nourisher of all, most excellent, the Friend and Master of the home.
