Etymology

A late-attested root, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *rak- (to prepare), and related to Persian رخت (raxt, tapestry, rugs, goods), Khotanese (raha-, dress). The Indo-Iranian root is traditionally derived further from Proto-Indo-European *rek- (to prepare), and connected to Gothic 𐍂𐌰𐌷𐌽𐌾𐌰𐌽 (rahnjan, to reckon, count), Proto-Slavic *reťi (to say), and Lithuanian rė̃kti (to cry out). However, some of these potential cognates (particularly 𐍂𐌰𐌷𐌽𐌾𐌰𐌽) are formally and semantically doubtful.
