From Proto-Indo-Aryan *wr̥náwti, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *wr̥náwti. Further etymology uncertain.[1] It is possibly a merger of verbs from three Proto-Indo-European roots: *h₂wer- (to enclose), *wel- (to enclose), and *wer- (to guard).[2]
