Inherited from Prakrit *𑀔𑀢𑁆𑀢𑀓 (*khattaka), from *𑀔𑀢𑁆𑀢 (*khatta) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-), from Sanskrit क्षत्र (kṣatra, “dominion”); the semantic shift occurred as follows: "dominion" > "land plot" > "management account of land plot" > "account book" (> "notebook"); perhaps the last senses were influenced by Classical Persian خطها (xatt-hā), the plural form of خط (xatt, “script; writing”), from Arabic خَطّ (ḵaṭṭ) (compare খৎ (khot)). Cognate with Assamese খাতা (khata), Odia ଖାତା (khātā), Bihari खाता (khātā), Hindustani کھاتا (khātā) / खाता (khātā), Nepali खाता (khātā), Gujarati ખાતું (khātũ), Punjabi ਖੱਤਾ (khattā), Marathi खाते (khāte), Varhadi खातं (khāta), Ahirani खातं (khāta).
