Inherited from Sanskrit डयन (ḍayana, bird's flight), from the root डी (ḍī, to fly) +‎ -अन (-ana, nominal suffix), back-formed from उड्डी (uḍḍī) under the influence of the unretroflexed variant दी (), probably formed as a root for the verb उड्डीयते (uḍḍīyate), whence also উড়া (uṛa).
