Inherited from Sanskrit *वातत्रास (vātatrāsa, “stormy wind”, literally “fearful wind”), a compound of वात (vāta, “wind”) + त्रास (trāsa, “fear”). Cognate with Assamese বতাহ (botah), Nepali बतास (batās), Odia ବତାସ (bôtasô).
