মনে পড়া • (mone poṛa)

1. to remember, to recall

   মেয়েটাকে দেখলেই মনে পড়বে।

   meẏeṭake dekholei mone poṛobe.

   You’ll remember as soon as you see the girl.

   আমার মনে পড়ছে না।

   amar mone poṛoche na.

   I can’t remember.

Though usually translated as “to remember”, its use is much more limited than the English verb, denoting a passive kind of remembering. It can be helpful to think of মনে পড়া (mone poṛa) as meaning “to fall into mind”:

• গানটা শুনলেই মনে পড়বে।

  ganṭa śunlei mone poṛobe.

  You’ll remember when you hear the song.

  (literally, “The song—as soon as hear it— will fall into mind.”)

• আমার বাড়ি ফিরে সব মনে পড়ল।

  amar baṛi phire śob mone poṛol.

  I remembered everything after returning home.

  (literally, “ my having returned home, everything fell into mind.”)

• যখনই গাছপালা দেখি আমার মায়ের কথা মনে পড়ে।

  jôkhôni gach dekhi amar maẏer kôtha mône pôṛe.

  Whenever I see trees, I think of Mom.

  (literally, “Whenever I see trees, for me, Mother’s thoughts fall into mind.”)

This verb is used exclusively in the third person, and all other conjugated forms in the following section are purely theoretical and never actually used.
