Inherited from Sanskrit সন্ধ্যা (sandhyā, twilight). Cognate with Bengali সাঁঝ (shãjh), Sylheti ꠢꠣꠁꠘ꠆ꠎꠣ (hainza), Rohingya házinná, Hindi साँझ (sāñjh). Doublet of সন্ধিয়া (xondhia) and সন্ধ্যা (xondhya).
