Etymology

Traditionally believed to be from Pali candapurī (literally “moon town”), from canda (“moon”) + purī (“town”); equivalent to Thai จันท +‎ บุรี (bù-rii).[1] Argued by modern scholar Sujit Wongthes to be from Pali candanapurī (literally “sandal town”), from candana (“sandal”, Asian trees of the genus Santalum) + purī (“town”); equivalent to Thai จันทน +‎ บุรี (bù-rii) which -น- is dropped.[2] Compare Old Khmer candapūrī, from which the archaic form จันทบูรี was possibly derived.
