ตรีทูต

From ตรี (dtrii, “third”) +‎ ทูต (tûut, “agent; envoy; representative”); literally "third agent", etc. Compare Khmer ត្រីទូត (trəytuut).

There are several suggestions regarding the origin of the first sense of the noun:^[1][2]

• It was from the traditional belief that the underworld bureaucracy will send four officials to bring the soul of a dead person down to the underworld court for judgment. The visitation of the third official means a person's death is approaching.
• It was from the traditional belief that everyone has in his body four spirits called เจตภูต (jèet-dtà-pûut). When anyone is about to die, the spirits will leave his body one by one. As the third spirit has left, it means his condition is extremely worse and his death is impending.
• It is a corruption of the term ตรีโทษ (dtrii-tôot, “condition of being heavily ill that death is imminent”, literally “three penalties”).

ตรีทูต • (dtrii-tûut)

1. (medicine) moribundity: state of being on the verge of death.
   • 2008, สารคดี, สารคดี (ฉบับ ๒๗๗–๒๘๘), สารคดี:

     เป็นดังความเจ็บป่วยขั้นตรีทูตที่ยากเกินเยียวยา

     bpen dang kwaam-jèp-bpùai kân dtrii-tûut tîi yâak gəən yiao-yaa

     It was like an illness at its terminal stage which was too difficult to cure.

   • 1992, ชัชวาลย์ จันทร์เรือง, อนุสรณ์งานฌาปนกิจศพ นางชัชวาลย์ (ศิลปบรรเลง) จันทร์เรือง, พรศิวการพิมพ์:

     ท่านป่วยเป็นวัณโรคเรื้อรังและมีนิวมอเนียแทรกซ้อนเข้ามา ร่างกายที่ชราแล้วทนไม่ไหว เข้าขั้นตรีทูต ขณะนั้น นาวาเอก นายแพทย์ประสบ วรมิตร นายแพทย์ประจำตัว ได้ตรวจดูชีพจรของคนไข้แล้วกระซิบบอกผมซึ่งอยู่ใกล้ ๆ ว่า ให้เตรียมพิธีศพได้

     She had suffered chronic tuberculosis with intervention of pneumonia. Her aged body could no longer bear it, as she reached the moribund point. At that time, Captain Doctor Prasop Wǭramit, a private physician, examined the pulse of the patient and whispered to me who was nearby, telling me that a funeral could now be arranged.

   • สังฆมณฑลเชียงใหม่, สารและความศรัทธาต่อพระเมตตา, page 62:

     พระองค์ทรงอยู่ในตรีทูตถึงสามชั่วโมงบนไม้กางเขน

     prá-ong song yùu nai dtrii-tûut tʉ̌ng sǎam chûua-moong bon máai-gaang-kěen

     He remained in the terminal state for three hours on the cross.

2. (politics and archaic) the third highest ranking member of a diplomatic mission after ราชทูต (râat-chá-tûut) and อุปทูต (ùp-bpà-tûut).
   • 1979, หม่อมราโชทัย, รวมจดหมายเหตุราชทูตไทยไปอังกฤษ พ.ศ. ๒๔๐๐, องค์การค้าของคุรุสภา:

     แล้วเสด็จไปยืนตรงหน้าตรีทูตตรัสถามว่า พระเจ้าอยู่หัวที่สองในกรุงสยามทรงสบายอยู่หรือ

     lɛ́ɛo sà-dèt bpai yʉʉn dtrong nâa dtrii-tûut dtràt tǎam wâa prá-jâao-yùu-hǔua tîi sɔ̌ɔng nai grung sà-yǎam song sà-baai yùu rʉ̌ʉ

     His Majesty then went to stand before the third envoy, asking "how is the second king of Siam doing?"

   • 1928, สมเด็จพระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอ กรมพระยาดำรงราชานุภาพ, อธิบายเรื่องราชทูตไทยไปยุโรป:

     ในแผ่นดินสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวบรมโกษฐ ราชทูตไปลังกาคราวแรกเปนที่พระสุธรรมไมตรี อุปทูตเปนขุนวาทีพิจิตร ตรีทูตเปนหมื่นพิพิธเสนหา

     nai pɛ̀n-din sǒm-dèt prá-jâao-yùu-hǔua bɔɔ-rom-má-gòot râat-chá-tûut bpai lang-gaa kraao rɛ̂ɛk bpen tîi prá sù-tam-mai-dtrii ùp-bpà-tûut bpen kǔn waa-tii-pí-jìt dtrii-tûut bpen mʉ̀ʉn pí-pít-sà-nee-hǎa

     Of those accredited to Lanka for the first time in the reign of King Bǭrommakōt, the royal envoy held the title of Phra Sutham Maitrī, the vice envoy was Khun Wāthī Phičhit, and the third envoy was Mư̄n Phiphit Sanēhā.

   • 1831, โกศาปานไปฝรั่งเศส ๑, องค์การค้าของคุรุสภา, page 233:

     ส่วนตรีทูต (คือ ออกขุนศรีวิสารวาจา) ก็เป็นบุตรของราชทูตสยามซึ่งได้ออกไปเจริญทางพระราชไมตรีในกรุงลิสบอนซึ่งเป็นเมืองหลวงของประเทศโปรตุเกส

     sùuan dtrii-tûut (kʉʉ ɔ̀ɔk-kǔn sǐi-wí-sǎan-waa-jaa) gɔ̂ɔ bpen bùt kɔ̌ɔng râat-chá-tûut sà-yǎam sʉ̂ng dâai ɔ̀ɔk bpai jà-rəən taang prá-râat-chá-mai-dtrii nai grung-lís-bɔ̂n sʉ̂ng bpen mʉʉang-lǔuang kɔ̌ɔng bprà-têet bproo-dtù-gèet

     As for the third envoy (that is, Ǭkkhun Sī Wisān Wāčhā), he was a son of a royal envoy of Siam who had gone out on an expedition to establish friendly relations in the city of Lisbon, which is the capital city of Portugal
