From ถุง (tǔng, “bag”) + มีชัย (mii-chai, “Mechai”), the given name of Mechai Viravaidya, a Thai politician known for his campaigns promoting the use of condoms in 1970s,[1] literally "victorious", from มี (mii, “to have”) + ชัย (chai, “victory”); thus translating "Mechai's bag" and, jocularly, "victorious bag".
