From Pali paccaya (“cause; suffix; etc”); possibly via Old Khmer pracai, pracaiya (“(1) source of livelihood; (2) monetary support; (3) requisites for monastic life, that is, clothing, food, shelter, medicine; etc”). Cognate with Modern Khmer បច្ច័យ (paccay). Compare Sanskrit प्रत्यय (pratyaya), from which Thai ปัตยัย is derived.
