From Sanskrit शाकराज (śākarāja, literally “Scythian king”), referring to King Śālivāhana, after whom the Śaka era is thought to have been named; probably via Old Khmer śakarāja (“era; year”); equivalent to Thai ศัก (sàk) + ราช (râat). Cognate with Modern Khmer សករាជ (sakkaʼraac); Burmese သက္ကရာဇ် (sakka.raj).
