Etymology

From หลังคา (lǎng-kaa, roof) +‎ แดง (dɛɛng, red); literally "red-roof(ed)"; after the notable red-roofed building, opened in 1911, of the "Hospital for Persons of Unsound Mind" (โรงพยาบาลคนเสียจริต), the first modern mental hospital of Thailand, established in 1889, now known as the Somdet Chaopraya Institute of Psychiatry.[1]
