From Pali porāṇa, purāṇa (“original; primitive; pristine; etc”), ultimately from Sanskrit पुराण (purāṇa, “idem”), possibly via Old Khmer porāna (“old; ancient; etc”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨷᩪᩁᩣ᩠ᨱ, ᨷ᩠ᩅᩫᩁᩣ᩠ᨱ, Lao ບຸລານ (bu lān), ບູຮານ (bū hān), ໂບຮານ (bō hān), Modern Khmer បុរាណ (boraan).
