Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /t͡ɕɔ̀/
  • Romanization: MLCTS: krau • ALA-LC: kroʻ • BGN/PCGN: kyaw • Okell: co

Etymology 1

Apparently from a Proto-Sino-Tibetan *k/ʔ-r(ə/a)w (to fry, roast, cook) (STEDT #5862, though none of its reflexes have been hyperlinked to it within the STEDT database). Compare Old Chinese (OC *keːws, *kreːwʔ, “to burn (on a pyre)”), (OC *rew, *rewʔ, *rews, “to hunt at night with torches, burn, make burnt offering”). Despite superficial similarity, apparently unrelated to (OC *sʰroːʔ, “to stir-fry”).

Verb

ကြော် (krau)

  1. to fry
Derived terms

Etymology 2

Apparently from a Proto-Lolo-Burmese *graw¹ (to shout, call out), with the only deduced cognate being Lahu (, to call) (STEDT).

Verb

ကြော် (krau)

  1. to shout loudly
