Per Hill (2019) (p. 27), from an earlier proto-Burmish (“*dzik”), and cognate with Old Chinese爭 (OC *ʔsreːŋ, “to fight, dispute”) and the first syllable of Tibetanཟིང་ཆ(zing cha, “quarrel, dispute”).
This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium. Particularly: “Not given etymology by STEDT (cac "filter, strain; examine"). Luce gives Old Chinese篩 (OC *sreːl, *srel, *sri, “sieve; to strain”) as a cognate.[1] Though the Old Chinese reconstruction isn't particularly close, it does bear some resemblance to that of 爭 (OC *ʔsreːŋ), which is thought to be cognate with the sense in Etymology 1 based on the comparative method.”
This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium. Particularly: “This is a "wastebasket" where MED got lazy and didn't assign any of these into their respective etymologies. Most, if not all of these, probably derive from the "strain, sift" sense of Etymology 2.”
